The threat to Bangalore

An e-mail threatening to blow up information technology companies in Bengaluru [Images] has created a flutter in the city. While security has been increased at major IT installations, the police traced the mail to a youth living in the Bharatinagar area of the city.
While the police claims the mail is a hoax, IT companies are taking no chances. The e-mail, which has been passed on to the city police’s cyber crime wing, also talks about a plan to assassinate a top Bharatiya Janata Party leader.

‘We do not want any foreign investment in India. This time no one can stop us in our mission and the attack would be executed between March 13 and 26,’ warns the e-mail.

It also mentions how ill-equipped Indian security forces are to combat terrorism. ‘The police department has been given sub-standard bullet-proof jackets. This helped us to kill them. All National Security Guard commandos are given the same poor quality helmets and bullet-proof jackets,’ the e-mail said.

‘Send the security personnel and commandos to us,’ the e-mail continued, ‘we’ll train them and provide our guns and strong bullet-proof jackets.’

He wanted 1000 dead

Even as the hunt for Riyaz Bhatkal, who is said to have co-founded the Indian Mujahideen [Images] continues, two of his accomplices have revealed that the dreaded terrorist wanted 1,000 people dead in every bomb blast that occurred in the country.
Syed Mohammed Naushad, 25, and Ahamed Bawa, 33, who were taken into custody by the Surat [Images] police after being arrested by the Mangalore police, have revealed during their interrogation that Bhatkal was a key Lashkar-e-Tayiba [Images] operative in south India and was aware of all its operations.

Bhatkal, who has so far eluded the police, had planned the Hyderabad blasts and also the attacks in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and New Delhi.

He was livid that his plan for serial blasts in the diamond hub of Surat flopped because of faulty circuitry, Bawa and Naushad revealed in custody.

Naushad, an engineering student from Mangalore, revealed that Bhatkal had stayed with him in 2003. ‘My house had become a meeting spot for operatives from Mumbai [Images], Gujarat and Karnataka. We met regularly and discussed bomb-making and how to carry out operations in different parts of the country,’ Naushad reportedly told his interrogators.

Bhatkal was an expert at assembling bombs, Naushad revealed, who explained that the terrorist stuffed ammonium nitrate into U-shaped wooden containers. Later, he drilled holes and fixed detonators which were then followed by the circuits and batteries.

‘We learnt the art of bomb-making from Riyaz,’ Naushad told the police, admitting that his group had assembled the bombs for both the Bengalaru and Surat operations. All the bombs were set to explode 47 hours later, he further revealed.

When the Bengaluru blasts failed to make an impact and when the bombs in Surat failed to detonate, ‘Riyaz screamed at me,’ Naushad told his interrogators. ‘”Why did it mission fail?” he asked. “Look what you have done. Thanks to you so many people survived.”‘

Intelligence inputs suggest that Bhatkal may have played a role in the Mumbai attacks. Investigators suspect he could have helped raise funds for the terror strikes, familiar as he was with terror funding and disbursal.

The final lesson

January 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Ajmal Kasab [Images], the terrorist captured alive during the terror attacks in Mumbai [Images], has revealed details of the ‘final lesson’ or shahdat given to him and his nine associates.
The motivational speech was delivered by Lashkar-e-Tayiba [Images] terrorist Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi before he escorted them to Karachi port from where the ten thugs sailed for their deadly mission.

During his speech, Lakhvi told the terrorists that Muslims are being persecuted across the world and assured them that their actions would make their brethren proud of them.

Abu Hamza, the prime accused in the attack on the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru [Images], on December 28, 2005, was among those who trained Kasab and his associates in maritime skills. Hamza, who had been trained by the Pakistan navy, was part of the group that conducted training sessions for the terrorists at Azizabad, near Karachi.

He also taught them how to use explosives and advanced weapons.

Kasab and his associates were repeatedly shown videos, photographs and maps of their targets in Mumbai.

Zarar Shah, the Lashkar’s communications chief, trained them to use satellite phones to communicate with their minders and identifying targets through Google Earth.

Kasab has claimed he thought that he and his fellow terrorists were training for a mission in Kashmir. But Intelligence Bureau agents dismiss this statement, terming it as a ploy to gain sympathy in Pakistan.

His revelations are included in the dossier Home Minister P Chidambaram [Images] will hand over to United States officials during his visit to Washington, DC, this week.
